WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT...

If you decide to refurbish or build a new lift, you will surely appreciate some information on what exactly will be happening in your house. Therefore, we have prepared a brief guide to the implementation of lift construction.

  • Singning the work contract

    Unless some of the parameters of the new lift delivery were addressed during the selection procedure, now is the right time to specify them. These include, in particular, the lift delivery date, payment terms and conditions, selection of the cabin construction and accessories, including colour design. After the contract is approved by both parties, it will be signed.

  • Preparation of the documentation

    Based on a detailed measurement on site, the design documentation for the lift will be prepared; this documentation will be used to manufacture the lift and for its subsequent installation. This stage usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Manufactoring of the lift

    Once the design documentation is prepared, the manufacturing of the new lift can begin. It is necessary to prepare a lift machine with a steel frame, a complete switchboard, including controls and electrical wiring, a lift cabin, a cabin frame, shaft and cabin doors, guides, suspension ropes, shock absorbers, a speed reducer and other safety devices. When the lift delivery also includes a new lift shaft, the material for the supporting structure and jacketing (safety glass or fibre-reinforced gypsum panels) will be provided. This stage usually takes 4 – 6 weeks.

  • Handover and takeover of the site

    Approximately one week before starting the construction work at the site, the site handover and takeover will take place. It is necessary to provide keys to the house and to a store room to be used for storing lift components, and as a room for installation technicians during construction work. Information plates with instructions for the house’s residents will be posted in the building to increase safety during the installation of the new lift. These will also state the phone number of the site manager – the contractor’s representative.

  • Delivery of materials

    It is agreed that the required materials and entire lift technology will be delivered on the first day of installation. The technology will be stored in a designated store room. Both the new machine and switchboard will be transported to the lift machine room to facilitate the subsequent installation.

  • Dismantling the old lift

    On the very same day, the dismantling of the old lift will begin. At first, the cabin and the counterweight of the old lift will be dismantled. The ropes will be removed, followed by disassembly of the lift machine, old wiring in the machine room and lift shaft. Then, the concrete stops in the lift pit and the concrete block under the lift machine will be torn down. The old shaft door will be kept in place to prevent people from falling down into the lift shaft. Depending on the type of lift, the old guides will also be disassembled.

  • Construction of a new shaft or jacketing of the existing shaft

    When the lift shaft is not made of solid masonry or prefabricated blocks, it will be necessary to solve the unsatisfactory jacketing of the lift shaft. If the existing jacket consists of a mesh or wire-glass, these unsatisfactory elements will be replaced by a certified jacket (Farmacell fibre-reinforced gypsum board to be installed onto the original steel structure, or shatterproof glass to be installed in the new steel structure).

  • Installation of a new lift
    The construction of a new lift usually begins in the machine room by installing a new drive to be connected to the new switchboard with control electronics and the main switch. After this functional connection is made, new guides will be installed, if needed, starting from the lowest floor; the ropes will be lowered down, and the platform to be used as a future base for the new cabin will be assembled. Then, the installation of guides will proceed upwards until the last part is mounted in the “head” of the lift shaft.
    Once the new guides are installed and the assembly platform becomes operational, the shaft doors come next. The doors will be dismantled, starting on the top floor, and replaced with new ones straight away. This will be followed by the installation of cabling, electronics and lighting in the lift shaft.
    Finally, the new cabin will be mounted and connected to the lift electronics. Simultaneously with this operation, the construction openings will be finished, joints sealed and the external surface of the shaft painted (unless shatterproof glass panels are used). In addition, the machine room will be painted, and the machine room floor and the shaft pit will be provided with a dustproof coating.
  • Completion of works, and testing

    After the lift installation has been completed, an installation test performed by an independent inspection engineer will follow. The compliance of all installed components with the supplied documentation, wiring of the entire lift’s electrical installation, installed components, and the functioning of all safety devices (emergency communication, door locks, shock absorbers, speed reducers, catchers, etc.) will be verified during this test. If the results are found to be satisfactory, the second test shall be carried out. This test shall be performed by an authorized body, e.g. by SZÚ (The Engineering Test Institute), to check that the lift meets all the requirements imposed on it by the applicable standards at the time of its commissioning. If everything is satisfactory, the lift can be put into regular use.

  • Handover of the finished works and documentation

    After the tests have been completed, the lift is ready to be handed over to the client. The acceptance certificate of the finished work will be issued and all lift documentation will be handed over. This includes, in particular, the lift data report, the specialised and operational inspections log, wiring documentation, lift shaft documentation, all certificates, and operating and maintenance manuals.
